Mumbai-Pune Expressway: Toll Plaza Breakdown

The Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway (Mumbai-Pune Expressway) is India's first six-lane concrete expressway, spanning approximately 95 km. It features two main toll plazas: the main plaza at Khalapur (near the Mumbai end) and a plaza at Lonavala (towards Pune). The expressway handles over 80,000 vehicles daily, making it one of India's busiest and most expensive toll corridors.

For a standard car, the one-way toll at Khalapur plaza is ₹245 via FASTag and ₹275 with cash. At the Lonavala plaza, the charges are ₹65 (FASTag) and ₹75 (cash). Combined, the total one-way car toll comes to ₹310 with FASTag and ₹350 with cash — a saving of ₹40 per trip, or about 11.4% when using FASTag.

Round Trip and Monthly Costs

A round trip from Mumbai to Pune and back costs ₹620 with FASTag and ₹700 with cash. For daily commuters or business travellers making this trip regularly, the monthly pass scheme can significantly reduce costs. A monthly pass valid for unlimited trips on the expressway costs approximately ₹6,000 for cars, which pays for itself in about 10 round trips.

For trucks and commercial vehicles, the toll costs are substantially higher. A 2-axle truck pays approximately ₹775 (FASTag) for a one-way trip, while multi-axle trucks can pay upwards of ₹1,400. These costs significantly impact logistics companies operating between Mumbai and Pune, making route optimisation essential for profitability.

Fuel Cost Estimates

For a petrol car averaging 15 km/l, the 95 km expressway journey consumes approximately 6.3 litres of fuel. At current petrol prices of ₹105/litre in Maharashtra, the one-way fuel cost is about ₹665. For diesel cars averaging 18 km/l, the fuel cost is approximately ₹460 (diesel at ₹78/litre). Combined with toll charges, a one-way trip for a petrol car costs about ₹975 (including toll).

Taking the alternative NH-4 (old Mumbai-Pune highway) route saves you ₹310 in toll but adds approximately 30-45 minutes of travel time and increases fuel consumption by about 15% due to stop-and-go traffic through towns like Panvel, Khopoli, and Lonavala city. The old highway also has speed breakers and narrower lanes, making it less suitable for heavy vehicles.

FASTag vs Cash: Which Is Better?

FASTag is mandatory for all vehicles from February 15, 2021, as per the Supreme Court and government directives. Vehicles without FASTag are charged double the applicable toll fee at plazas where FASTag lanes are available. Beyond the 10% discount, FASTag offers the convenience of contactless payment, reduced waiting time at toll plazas (30 seconds vs 2-3 minutes for cash), and online recharge and transaction history.

Cash payments are still accepted at designated cash lanes, but the higher fees and longer wait times make them increasingly impractical. With FASTag, you also get detailed monthly statements showing your travel patterns and toll expenditure, which is invaluable for expense tracking and tax purposes for business users. TollRoute recommends FASTag for all highway travellers.
