Topping the list is the Khalapur toll plaza on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, charging ₹245 for cars with FASTag and ₹275 in cash. As part of the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, this plaza alone contributes to the highest single-plaza toll in India. Combined with the Lonavala plaza (₹65 FASTag), the total expressway toll reaches ₹310 one-way for cars, making it the most expensive corridor per kilometre in the country.
The high fee is justified by the engineering marvel of the expressway — 95 km of 6-lane concrete road with 4 tunnels, 33 flyovers, and 5 interchanges. Construction costs exceeded ₹4,500 crore, and the concessionaire operates a 25-year BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) agreement. Trucks pay ₹615 (2-axle) to ₹1,400 (multi-axle) one-way, significantly impacting logistics costs between India's two largest cities.
The Kherki Dhaula toll plaza on NH-48 handles over 1.5 lakh vehicles daily, with car tolls of approximately ₹85 via FASTag. While the per-plaza charge may seem moderate, Kherki Dhaula is one of six plazas on the Delhi-Jaipur corridor, meaning cumulative costs add up quickly for through traffic. The plaza is notorious for congestion during peak hours, with wait times exceeding 30 minutes on weekends.
Alternative routes include taking the Delhi-Gurugram Metro or using the Dwarka Expressway to bypass this plaza entirely. For regular commuters between Delhi and Gurugram, the monthly pass at ₹2,500 offers substantial savings compared to paying ₹85 per trip twice daily. NHAI has also proposed a free bypass lane for local traffic to ease congestion, but implementation is still pending.
The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway toll plaza charges approximately ₹75 for cars one-way. While not the highest on this list, the frequency of use makes it expensive — daily commuters pay ₹150 per day (₹3,000 per month for 20 working days). The 24 km expressway, built at a cost of ₹1,000 crore, handles over 1 lakh vehicles daily and significantly reduces travel time between the two cities from 60 minutes to just 25 minutes.
For frequent travellers, the monthly pass at ₹900 offers a 70% discount compared to daily toll payments. The expressway connects to the Yamuna Expressway, which provides access to Agra and Lucknow. Combined toll costs for Noida to Agra (via both expressways) total approximately ₹310 for cars, making it a premium but efficient corridor for UP travellers.
The Eastern Peripheral Expressway, a 135-km greenfield expressway ringing Delhi, charges approximately ₹220 for cars one-way. Built to divert traffic away from Delhi, the EPE has toll plazas at multiple entry and exit points. The expressway features India's first Smart Traffic Management System with variable speed limits based on traffic density. Despite its high toll, it saves 2-3 hours compared to the old route through Delhi.
The EPE is particularly expensive for trucks, with tolls starting at ₹550 (2-axle) and going up to ₹1,100 (multi-axle). However, the time savings and reduced fuel consumption (no stop-and-go traffic through Delhi) often offset the higher toll costs. The expressway has reported over 80% compliance with FASTag, making cash lanes nearly obsolete since 2025.
The Maduravoyal toll plaza on the Chennai Bypass (NH-45) charges approximately ₹70 for cars, making it one of the highest in South India. The 32 km bypass handles traffic from four major national highways converging on Chennai, carrying over 90,000 vehicles daily. The toll collection here contributes to maintenance of the 6-lane concrete road that has significantly reduced travel time across Chennai from 2 hours to just 35 minutes.
Letting you skip five city traffic signals, the bypass pays for itself in fuel savings alone for regular users. The monthly pass at ₹1,500 makes it affordable for daily commuters from Chennai's western suburbs. Compared to the old city route, which has 23 traffic signals and an average delay of 45 minutes during peak hours, the bypass offers exceptional value despite the toll charge.
